It’s the second week of the new school year, but chants for the protesters’ five demands are still as strong as ever on the streets just outside schools.

Students from at least a hundred secondary schools formed massive human chains crossing districts, ahead of school hours.

In one instance, over twenty schools linked hands - from Heep Yunn School in Ma Tau Wai, to Pui Ching Middle School, all the way to Wah Yan College on Waterloo Road.

Some drivers honked their horns in support.

At the same time students from schools in Kwai Chung lined up across nearly three kilometres of road.

“The situation of police abusing their power is getting more and more serious. I think the government must set up an independent commission to monitor the police and let things return to stability.”

“We can contribute too as secondary school students. The turnout was more than I expected. I didn’t think so many people would come. I think they all feel an affinity to Hong Kong.”

Over on island side, streets were lined with students. Some graduates also joined in.

“Students are under a lot of pressure. Even discussing these issues in school causes rifts, not to mention rifts between family members. So we need to use this chance to get together and shout ‘Hongkongers, add oil.”

But an armed man was seen near one of the human chains outside Cognitio College in Kowloon.

School authorities say that a teacher was hurt in an altercation with him and was sent to hospital, but no students were injured.
